The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is the government agency responsible for maritime safety, protection of the marine environment and aviation and marine search and rescue. AMSA is largely self-funded through levies charged on the commercial shipping industry. AMSA is administered from its head office in Braddon, Australian Capital Territory. 

AMSA is responsible for the following maritime-related services:

  • Operations - Monitoring ship, crew and coastal pilot compliance with maritime safety standards
  • Response - National search and rescue coordination and marine pollution response services
  • Standards - Maintain regulatory framework and standards for navigation and maritime safety and environmental protection for all vessels in Australian waters. 
  • Corporate - Managing the Australian Register of Ships, which delivers ship registration services for the commercial shipping, fishing and boating sectors
