The Australia Council is the Australian Government's arts funding and advisory body. The company is funded by the Department of Communications and the Arts and employs approximately 100 full-time equivalent staff. The Australia Council is administered from its head office in Surry Hills, New South Wales. 

The Australia Council directly supports young, emerging and established artists, as well as new and established organisations through its funding programs. The council is also responsible for formulating and implementing policies to foster and promote the arts in Australia and also advises governments and industry on arts-related issues. The Australia Council operates in the following divisions:


  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Arts - Development and promotion of traditional arts practices
  • Arts Development - Audience and market development, arts marketing, skills development, international marketing & promotion, research & analysis and business services
  • Arts Funding - Support excellence and diversity of arts practice including dance, literature, music, theatre and visual arts.
  • Arts Organisations - Ensure arts organisations are vibrant, financially viable and accessible across Australia
